Skateboard
New Single ~ August 16 2024
Dive into the sentimental magic of ‘Skateboard’ by Kristen Rae Bowden - an indie pop gem with a soaring vocal and a folk/country heart. Born out of co-writer Joe Lawlor’s (DMB) nostalgic guitar riff, ‘Skateboard’ captures the elation of tumultuous, young, long-distance love, college parties, skateboarding together on dark streets in the dog days of summer: the thrill and the longing.‘Skateboard’ paints a picture of a youthful time when you’re waiting for life to begin, not knowing that you’re already living it. Kristen Rae Bowden, indie siren with “an inherent feel for the profound” (Melissa Clarke, Americana Highways) hails from the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains and brings a touch of that old-soul depth to every note. Mixed by John Alagia (Lukas Nelson, Simon and Garfunkel) and Pedro Laet (Mt. Joy, DMB), and mastered by Whynot Jansveld (The Wallflowers, Ingrid Michaelson), ‘Skateboard’ will transport you into the warmth of summer’s embrace with the reckless abandon of first love.
Fault Lines
OUT NOW
Kristen Rae Bowden is delivering a road-trip-worthy summer anthem with her new single "Fault Lines". Inspired by the hooky rock of the 1990’s but layered with other-worldly sonic elements, the dreamy pop track is lush with ethereal groove.
Over the blended tones of a cool Fender Rhodes and warm electric guitars, KRB's sweeping vocals paint a sun-drenched picture of a breakup on the California coast: "You were drivin’ down the Highway 1 / you got weed in your pocket, your head's in the sun / that highway's right up on the edge / just like our relationship that we drove right off the ledge". Propulsive bass and effected drum sounds lend funky forward motion to the soundscape as the lyrics explore themes of nostalgia, independence, and letting go.
"It's funny the memories that stand out over time," she says. "Sometimes they're more like snapshots than a movie... the light on the ocean through the open car window, my hair blowing in the wind, the way my lover's hands looked on the steering wheel. My sense of beauty is heightened in times of heartbreak.”
Marry Me Once
Released April 25 2023
Kristen Rae Bowden's new folk-tinged single “Marry Me Once” is a silky ballad of self-acceptance and personal independence. Over the majestic tones of a grand piano she sings to us with vulnerable defiance: “You’re not gonna marry me once / just to say it’s forever / that’s not how forever happens to be.” “Marry Me Once” was inspired by an ironic turn of the tides.
Kristen explains, “In my early 20's I thought I wanted to get married. For love, I thought. In reality, it was because I was afraid of the unknown. I wanted something to be 'all figured out'. Back then, thankfully, no one asked. I grew up and learned to love myself, me alone. Suddenly men wanted to seal the deal with me on paper. But I no longer wish to figure out my forever, today. I want to freely choose and be chosen, and that must happen every day, maybe every hour, whether you marry your lover or not.”
Sonically “Marry Me Once” shines with warm, earthy authenticity, evoking mental images of fresh air and rolling waves. The lively vocal melody, layered velvet harmonies, and smooth guitar will draw you into an intimate natural world, where Kristen’s confessional lyrics may remind you: know thyself.
There is only one person you have to live with forever, and that person is you.
Hard to Love
Released Valentines Day 2023
Piano-centric singer-songwriter Kristen Rae Bowden explores a new era of adulthood with an indie pop sound on her new single “Hard to Love”. Inspired by a crippling fear of intimacy in her early thirties, Bowden is offering her new track on Valentines Day as a love letter to the lonely and jaded. Armed with sweet-but-salty vocals and an analogue synth, she explores the cynicism that comes after one too many heartbreaks: “When will things just get back to normal / I think to myself / and scoff as the thought runs through my mind.” The track was recorded at the Dave Matthews’ Bands’ Haunted Hollow studio and features Dane Alderson (Yellowjackets), Joe Lawlor (Egypt, DMB), and Nate Brown (Everything). Retelling a universal story with the heartbeat of an electronic drum, “Hard to Love” encourages us to let go and get vulnerable… a reminder that is always right on time.
